About The City of Roses Chorus Aberdeen

We are a growing group of currently around 30 ladies of all ages who just love singing! We meet once a week in Drumoak Aberdeenshire to practice our songs and performance skills. We sing a mixture of songs arranged for us in the a cappella Barbershop style.

We love to perform and when invited, sing for organisations and charities in Aberdeenshire who request our style of music and entertainment. We love to improve our skills - so get regular coaching and enter the annual Sweet Adelines regional competitions every May.

Everything's coming up Roses!

The City of Roses Barbershop Chorus started in Peterculter Village Hall Aberdeenshire  with a group of ladies getting together in June 1994, the Chorus was chartered in 1996 and went on to compete in the National Competition the same year, where we won a prestigious chorus award. The ladies, who were 23-strong, sang "Who will take my place when I'm gone?" and "I'm the one you're looking for".  In 1998, we went on to win third place in the small chorus section. If you're looking for a unique musical experience to liven up your event, please check out our Hire Us section.

Education

In addition to sharing our music with others, another great passion of ours is learning more about the art of acapella singing. Vocal instruction is a regular part of chorus rehearsals, and a very important component of the chorus experience. A couple of times a year, we will get specialist coaching from a visiting master in the art of barbershop singing, where we learn many fabulous tricks of the trade.

CompetitionIn the spring of every year, The City of Roses Chorus participates in the Sweet Adelines International Region 31 chorus competition which in 2012 is taking place in Birmingham. Competitions are a special time for quartets and choruses from our region to come together to sing for each other, and get some constructive feedback from a panel of international judges. The winners of the regional competition in both quartet and chorus categories get to travel to International Competition, which is held in the autumn in a city selected each year. Click here to learn more.

Quartets

Barbershop singing originated as a quartet style of music, 4 singers consistening of 1 melody singer and 3 harmony parts. Most choruses have a number of members who form their own quartets in addition to singing with the chorus. The City of Roses Chorus currently is home to 2 quartets and an Octet ( 8 singers, 2 of each voice part.) We are very proud of them! Click here to see our quartet section to learn more about them.

Affiliation

The City of Roses Chorus is a member of Sweet Adelines, International, a non-profit organization of approximately 30,000 members in choruses and quartets, worldwide. The Headquarters is in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
